December 2005: 'Tis the Season...
To Take Time....
"We live in a digital time. Our rhythms are rushed, rapid fire
and relentless, our days carved up into bits and bytes. We celebrate
breadth rather than depth, quick reaction more than considered
reflection. We skim across the surface, alighting for brief moments
at dozens of destinations but rarely remaining for long at any
one. We race through our lives without pausing to consider who
we really want to be or where we really want to go. We're wired
up but we're melting down." The Power of Full Engagement by Jim
Loehr and Tony Schwartz.
Many of us feel this way 99% of the time, and so in this brief
Holiday Season my desire is to encourage you to take the time necessary
to slow down long enough to, breathe. For me this means taking
the time to enjoy my work (which is a blessing), my family (who
I adore), and my friends (who are a constant source of strength
and encouragement).
To help you (and myself) counter the constant rush of white water,
I offer this gift to you for the Holiday Season... take it and
enjoy!
"Slow me down, Lord! Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting
of my mind. Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal
reach of time.
Give me, amidst the confusion of my day, the calmness of the
everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles
with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in my
memory.
Help me to know the magical, restoring power of sleep.
Teach me the art of taking minute vacations....of slowing down
to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to
read a few lines from a good book.
Remind me each day of the fable of the hare and the tortoise
that I may know that the race is not always to the swift; that
there is more to life than increasing its speed.
Let me look upward into the branches of the towering oak and
know that it grew great and strong because it grew slowly and
well. Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep
into the soil of life's enduring values that I may grow toward
the stars of my greater destiny.... Amen."

Bless you this Christmas and Holiday Season, and may 2006 bring
joy and peace to you and yours!
