January 2006
Another Year...
"Be firm about where you are going, and flexible
about how you get there." Ralph Marston
Moving into 2006, my goal is to give you a powerful and yet simple
tool for structuring your personal and professional goals. This
will not involve pages of deep internal evaluation, which as good
as that might be, can leave you without a clear, quick handle to
hold on to in your moments of indecision. Personally, I need something
simple and straightforward, and this fits the bill!
First start with a look back at the past year:
2005
- What was your overall theme?
- What were your three biggest wins personally?
- What were your three biggest wins professionally?
- What were the three top lessons that you learned ?
- What was the one personal quality that you grew in?
- List the ways that this quality helped you professionally
and personally.
Now look forward:
2006
- Looking forward, what do you want the overall theme of 2006
to be? Keep this simple, possibly two words. For example, one
year mine was "Confidence and Courage," another year it was "Boldness
and (calculated) Risk."
- What are your top three goals personally?
- What are your top three professional goals?
- What personal quality do you want to develop?
- List the ways that this quality will help you move forward
in both your personal and professional world.
The most important thing to remember is, keep it simple. The
over-all theme (two to three words), should consist of words that
you will remember easily when faced with challenging personal and/or
professional choices. These words will be the touchstone (genuineness
or test of value) that will keep you mentally focused. Looking
back over the years, I am amazed when I realize the progress that
I have achieved using this extremely simple exercise. Try it!
I wish you a healthy, joy-filled and successful 2006!
